School Committee considers 6th grade move to middle school

Board of Education · Meeting of September 21, 2021

AMHERST — School Committee considers 6th grade move to middle school, votes to stay remote. The Amherst School Committee heard a proposal to move 6th grade students to ARMS beginning in 2022-23, citing space constraints at elementary schools Wildwood and Fort River, each of which has lost twelve classrooms due to COVID-19 reconfigurations. Superintendent Michael Morris said the district faces worsening shortages in pull-out program space and cafeteria capacity.

Public comment expressed concern the timeline is rushed; residents noted students have missed 18 months of in-person instruction. The committee voted unanimously to continue remote meetings until further notice, with member Heather Hala Lord abstaining. A committee vote on the 6th grade move is scheduled for October 5.
