Amherst Advises Caution As Heat Prompts Cooling Centers, Pond Alert

DATELINE — AMHERST

Amherst posted a town alert on conditions at Puffer's Pond and pointed residents toward cooling centers Monday as the region continues to see summer heat, while election officials also reminded voters that the State Primary is five weeks away.

TOWN HALL

The town's website carried an "Amherst Alert" headlined "Puffer's Pond Swimming Update," directing residents to check current conditions before visiting the popular swimming spot, though the town's posted excerpt did not specify whether the pond remains open. Separately, the town flagged that cooling centers and a number of outdoor facilities are open through the summer for residents who need a safe, cool space during periods of extreme heat.

Election officials also reminded residents that the State Primary Election falls on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Voters must be registered in Amherst and can choose to vote by mail, vote absentee, vote early in person, or vote on election day itself.

COMMUNITY & ARTS

The town will hold a Purple Heart Community Designation Ceremony on Friday, Aug. 14, recognizing veterans awarded the Purple Heart, part of the town's ongoing civic and historical recognition programming.

On the library side, Amherst's community calendar lists a Nature Storytime program for children on Wednesday, Aug. 12. The long-running Amherst Farmers Market returns Saturday, Aug. 15, with the town's usual mix of local produce and vendor stalls.

COMING UP

The Town Council's Governance, Organization, and Legislation Committee meets Tuesday, Aug. 11, alongside the town's Commission for Persons with Disabilities and two Jones Library committees, the Personnel, Planning, and Policy Committee and the Budget and Investment Committee. On Wednesday, Aug. 12, the Department of Public Works Building Committee and the Valley Green Energy Working Group are both scheduled to meet. Open-play pickleball continues at Mill River on Tuesdays and Thursdays this month. The Nature Storytime program (Aug. 12), the Purple Heart ceremony (Aug. 14), and the Farmers Market (Aug. 15) round out the week's community calendar.
