Amherst Library's Summer Reading Program Nears August 7 Finale

Amherst's library-driven summer programming took center stage as the town's "Plant a Seed, Read!" summer reading initiative heads toward its August 7 conclusion, even as town hall's marquee items from recent days continued to develop in the background.

TOWN HALL

Town hall's News Flash feed carried no major new items beyond ongoing coverage of the Hampshire College campus zoning study and extreme-heat guidance, both already reported in recent days. The town's homepage continues to highlight the Bangs Community Center renovation project, which remains on track for completion in early 2027, and a cable television survey open to residents through August 7.

SCHOOLS

Amherst Public Schools' news feed did not add major new items over the past day, though the district continues to promote its August 12 Substitute & Jobs Expo, open to applicants across all grade levels and buildings, with applications due by August 5. Kindergarten registration also remains open for children turning five before December 1, 2026.

COMMUNITY & ARTS

The Amherst Public Library's "Plant a Seed, Read!" summer reading program, running since June 15, is entering its final two weeks before wrapping up August 7 with a Summer Reading Program Finale Ice Cream Social. In the coming days, the library will host several children's programs, including Bubbly Babies on July 24, Little Art Makers on July 27, and Lindsay and her Puppet Pals on July 28, alongside adult offerings such as the ATL Reads Fiction Book Club on July 28 and a virtual talk on painter Gilbert Stuart on July 30.

Downtown, the town's community calendar lists a Downtown Summer Concert Series date on July 24, the Amherst Farmers Market and Open-Play Pickleball at Mill River on July 25, and a West African Drumming Workshop the same day.

COMING UP

The Cable Television Advisory Committee meets July 24. The Amherst Housing Authority Board of Commissioners meets July 27. The Planning Board convenes July 29, and the Jones Library, Inc. Board of Trustees meets July 30. At the library, Little Listeners and Story Makers Studio both take place July 29, followed by Tots & Tunes and Creative Corner on July 30, and the Andy's Playhouse Kids Performance on July 31. The library's summer reading program concludes August 7 with its Ice Cream Social finale, the same day the town's cable survey and the Electrify Amherst artist submission deadline both close.
