Schools OK Identity Policy, Punt on Restraint Rules
School Committee · Meeting of October 1, 2026
Amherst-area school panels approve identity policy, stall on restraint procedures. Meeting jointly online Thursday, the Amherst, Pelham and Amherst-Pelham Regional school committees voted unanimously across all three bodies to adopt revised Policy ACAA on identity-affirming school culture, following union negotiation over a grievance and unfair labor practice charge. The regional committee then rejected new procedures implementing Policy JKAA on physical restraint and seclusion, 4-2, after Sharon Roof of the Special Education Parent Advisory Council asked members to hold off "to allow for additional review, discussion and collaboration." Superintendent Dr.
Z said a revised version would need three to four weeks for legal review. After more than an hour of debate, including a failed 3-3 regional vote that forced Amherst to rescind and re-vote, the three committees settled on a four-member joint subcommittee, two town elementary representatives plus two regional appointees, to plan the superintendent transition, with recommendations due back by December.
