School Committee elects Shiao as chair, approves AFSCME contract

Amherst School Committee reorganizes leadership and approves AFSCME labor contract in contentious vote. Jennifer Shiao was elected chair in a 3-2 vote over Sarah Marshall, with Bridget Hynes as vice chair and Deb Leonard as secretary unanimously. The board voted 4-1 to approve a new AFSCME contract for 2024-2027, with Irv Rhodes voting no on the agreement that adds a new salary lane and increases longevity payments and night shift differentials.
School Business Administrator Shannon Bernacchia reported the district is on track through the second quarter despite Special Education costs exceeding projections.
