Amherst Warns of Traffic Near New Elementary School Opening
AMHERST — The town is warning drivers of increased congestion on South East Street as Amherst's new elementary school at 70 South East Street opens, even as several other town initiatives move forward this week, including a new push to recruit residents for the school's public art selection.

Town officials on Monday alerted residents that the opening of the new elementary school at 70 South East Street may increase traffic congestion on South East Street between Route 9 (Belchertown Road/College Street) and Main Street, according to a News Flash posted to the town website. The advisory did not specify an exact opening date but urged drivers in the area to expect delays.
Separately, the town is recruiting residents for a new, time-limited Percent for Art Advisory Committee, which will help select public art for the new elementary school. Residents interested in serving can submit a Community Activity Form, with applications reviewed beginning September 1.
The town also opened its application window for downtown parking permits for the upcoming season, which runs September 1 through May 31; residents can apply online. And the Community Preservation Act Committee is accepting grant applications for projects supporting community housing, historic preservation, open space, and recreation, with a submission deadline of October 16.
The town's previously announced paving closure on Spring Street, between Boltwood Avenue and Churchill Road, remains set for Tuesday, August 25, with the road and street parking closed near 26 Spring Street for the day.
