Amherst Schools review 5% FY26 budget, plan K-5 restructuring

Board of Education · Meeting of June 17, 2025

Amherst Schools review 5% FY26 budget with staffing cuts. Shannon Bernacchia presented the budget, a 5 percent increase requiring $1.156 million in reductions. The committee restored three special education teachers (one per school), one general education teacher, and full-time specials teachers, but left unrestored positions at Crocker Farm, English language learner paraprofessionals, a special education secretary, and the school psychologist.

Members raised concerns about cutting the Building Blocks teacher and the long-term cost of eliminating the in-house psychologist. The district also announced plans for a new K-5 school, redistricting, and academic programming changes to be finalized before the 2025-26 school year.
