Amherst schools restore six positions with town funding
Board of Education · Meeting of March 19, 2024
Amherst School Committee votes unanimously to restore six positions from budget cuts. The restoration of four elementary teaching positions, two special education professional roles, one pre-K paraeducator, and one instrumental music teacher was enabled by $259,331 in additional town funding. Chair Sarah Marshall and members Jennifer Shiao, Irv Rhodes, Debra Leonard, and Bridget Hynes acted after substantial public comment urging protection of the music program and special education support.
Superintendent Douglas Slaughter presented the administration's recommendation that special education restoration would have the greatest impact on students; the committee additionally directed that no funds be allocated to the Regional School Committee.
