Board of Education · Meeting of May 21, 2024
Amherst School Committee approves Student Opportunity Act plan to address chronic absenteeism. Chair Sarah Marshall moved to approve the draft plan dated March 27, 2024 designed to support curriculum implementation, enhance social-emotional learning and mental health services, and strengthen support for multilingual learners. The committee voted 3-0-2 in favor, with Committee members Irv Rhodes and Bridget Hynes abstaining over concerns about implementation details and the pace of approval before a DESE deadline.
Interim Superintendent Doug Slaughter also won consensus support for moving 6th grade to the Amherst Regional Middle School beginning fall 2026 in a Sixth Grade Academy model.
